Meehan Statement on Mariner East 2 Construction Suspension

Statement

Date: Jan. 3, 2018
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Energy

Congressman Patrick Meehan (R-Pa.) issued the following statement after the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection suspended construction permits for the Mariner East 2 pipeline:

"When it comes to pipeline construction, the top priority must be the safety of the surrounding communities and their residents," said Congressman Meehan. "I'm pleased to see the Commonwealth take action to protect Pennsylvania families by halting construction of the pipeline until Sunoco is able to address construction concerns. Built safely, pipelines can play an important role in our regional economy and support jobs in the energy sector. It's vital that we have the proper safeguards in place to ensure we're not putting our communities at risk."

Last month, Meehan called on Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf to address concerns about the pipeline's safety and to conduct and publicize a risk assessment that takes into consideration the potential hazards of a pipeline leak.
